Overview
City Relief is a mobile outreach that helps people struggling with or at risk of homelessness. They consistently go to the same eight locations each week and create an intentional space that is welcoming and dignifying. How? By setting up tables & chairs on the sidewalk that welcome guests and invite conversation over a shared meal.
Summary
The Problem
To design and enhance a mobile/pop-up, guest experience for City Relief, connecting friends and guests in need, with much-needed resources while creating an equitable sense of place for friends and neighborhoods.
The Insight
Group accommodations like shelters often produce fear. How do we create a space for people to feel at ease?
The Solution
The concept is to create a trustworthy, safe, and approachable space. My design is oriented to putting the unhoused at ease. It utilizes a modular system with warm textures and materials that has the flexibility to operate in diverse locations. This sense of a safe home environment would draw them to City Relief’s volunteers who could give them the help they need to integrate back into society. Thus remembering City Relief as the stepping stone to getting their life back on track.
